Call for immediate measures to ensure safety of the Indian American community.

The Indian American community condemns the attacks on Indian Consulates and Embassies in San Francisco, CA, London, UK and Brisbane, Australia. These attacks come on the heels of attacks against Hindu Mandirs, or places of worship, in many places around the world. Indian Americans are increasingly concerned about the apparent lack of safety and security of Indian and Hindu American institutions in the wake of these attacks.

Available reports indicate that the perpetrators of the attacks are adherents of the extremist separatist “Khalistan” ideology that seeks a division of India with the creation of an ethno-theocratic state. These extremists often claim credit for hate crimes including vandalism, intimidation tactics and physical attacks. It’s important to remember that Khalistani extremists have a long and tragic track record of violence, including being responsible for the downing of an Air India jet in 1985, killing more than 300 people.

Failure to check the violence by people who are motivated to disrupt peace and create a condition of fear is only encouraging an escalation in aggression. The Indian Diaspora welcomes the statement of the US State Department condemning the attack against the Indian Consulate at San Francisco. It also welcomes the statement of Australian Prime Minister Mr. Anthony Albanese, rejecting hatred and attacks on Hindu Temples.

We call on all civic officials and federal, state and local law enforcement to take immediate measures to ensure the safety of the Indian American community. We also urge the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice to monitor extremists activities, prevent hateful attacks and take decisive action against these perpetrators of hate.
